14 plate? It’s time for your car MOT check

Don’t be nervous, your vehicle’s in good hands

If you drive a car that is three or more years old it is your responsibility to ensure that your car MOT check is in order and is checked every 12 months.

If you are driving a car with a 14 registration plate then your first MOT is due very soon.

When should I check my MOT?

Your car’s MOT check is due exactly three years after the date of registration, so if your 14 plate was registered on April 1st 2014, your MOT must legally be carried out by 1st April 2017.

If you’re wondering ‘how do I check my MOT due date?’ the date of the car’s registration can be found on the vehicle’s V5C form, otherwise known as the log book.

What happens if I don’t check and my MOT runs out?

It is not legal to drive a car once the MOT has expired, unless you have booked your car’s MOT check and are driving it to the MOT test centre.

For this reason, it is very important that you note, in advance, the due date of your MOT and ensure that it is booked in to be tested in time to renew the MOT on or before its due date.

What is a car MOT check?

The Ministry of Transport test (commonly known as your car’s MOT check) is a test that is carried out annually on every vehicle over three years old to ensure its road worthiness.

An MOT takes around an hour to perform, after which you will receive an MOT certificate as proof that your car passed the legally performed tests.

If your vehicle fails its MOT check on any points you will be informed of the areas in need of address and they will need to be fixed so that the car can be tested again.

The test itself can vary in price but is not usually expensive.

However, if you have your MOT check on the date that it is due and the car fails, you cannot legally drive it away until all of the fixes have been made.

This makes it really important to book your car into an MOT test centre that you trust to do a good job for a fair price, should you require any repair work.
